After reading through the main topic of my original post I have to apologize for drifting away from the real topic here: the European Commission. I do agree that the work of the European Commission is sometimes not good at all. It seems that decisions are driven by lobbyists and decision makers who are completely bought by multinational corporations (even from outside the European Union).
I do like the idea of Europe in general and how the people from different nations begin to get to know each other but I too do not like the European Commission.

I am living in Austria and there might be many people here too who do not love the EU but I think that real hate like you are describing is not so common. But I cannot speak for other people than me and I have to say that I really am experiencing many good things every day. I love the Euro currency (although not every member state... like your own too... is participating). And of course I can profit from agreements like for e.g. the Schengen agreement (which I think Britain also denied). I was two times doing internships in Spain which both were financially supported by European internship programs. I met many people from all around Europe there who also profited a lot from European institutions and due to these connections I was able to get to know other European countries better and to sometimes even visit people living there.
Surely the whole EU system might not be perfect but I have great faith and trust in the people who represent us at the institutions. And there are people like you who I think also help to change the system and who help to make Europe an even better place to live in.
PS: Sorry for my bad English... I wish I could express myself in a better way but therefore we must switch to German :)

Thanks for recommending the book.. but I've read enough on the EU to convince me that it is a bureaucratic monolith which is doomed to failure. It is fundamentally UN-democratic and as such it will never have a mandate from its "citizens". And.. if it doesn't get that mandate, it will just go ahead and steamroller its way through.
I don't know whch country you live in, but here in Britain, it is hated. It intends to rob nation states of their identity, their culture, their traditions, their history and their democracy.
It has only one raison d'etre.. the perpetuation of itself for the sake of power and control. It will eventually go the way of that other artifical construction - the USSR - on which it is modelled. It will collapse in on its own fedit corruption. But at what cost to Europe?

It is a monster. And I do urge you to think again and start fighting back.

So you fully dislike the European idea?
If that is so then I am feel very sorry for that.
I think some ideas are really great. But some things surely are not really working. As I am no politics expert (which you might have already guessed) I cannot go into real deep details on that topic. I just can say that Europe and it's idea is great.
Maybe I am more referring to an European idea which consists only to a small part of the present political and organisational dilemma. When I say Europe (in the meantime) I see a bigger vision which does not need any bureaucracy overhead.
May I recommend you <a href="http://www.hafenscher.net/blog/archives/32" rel="nofollow">a book</a>?

I dislike the European idea.. full stop.
Can't we do something to get rid of it?
Democracy should be enough.
